Proyecto Emely Ruiz is a social empowerment program that advocates for the rights and menstrual health of adolescent girls and women in the Dominican Republic. It was inspired by the personal story of its founder, Emely Ruiz, who experienced homelessness with her family and faced firsthand the urgent need for access to menstrual hygiene products. This experience motivated her to create an initiative that is now transforming lives in underserved communities.
Proyecto Emely Ruiz has been a pioneering initiative in introducing and promoting the use of menstrual cups in the Dominican Republic. Through a pilot program and with the support of sponsors such as Saalt Cup and Pixie Cup, it has impacted more than 5,000 women and adolescent girls in rural communities — not only by distributing the product but also by providing education on its use, breaking cultural taboos, and promoting dignified and sustainable menstrual health. The project has also received collaboration from community leaders, local government authorities, media, and healthcare professionals, which has significantly strengthened its implementation and reach.
